Cagliari
Place and Surroundings
Capital of Sardinia in the south of Golfo degli Angeli. Cagliari was named by the Phoenicians "Kalaris" (Rocky city) and used already in the 8th century b.C. as an important Mediterranean harbor. While the medieval Castello quarter, the oldest part of Cagliari, identifies itself by old city walls, impressive watch-towers, narrow alleys and wide view terraces, the lively harbor area of Marina offers a good choice of typical restaurants (via Sardegna) and boutiques (via Manno, via Garibaldi).
A visit to the lagoons of Santa Gilla and Molentargius with a lot of flamingos and the long beautiful sandy beach of Poetto are definitely a must.
