Place and Surroundings

The small farming villages of Lunamatrona, Pauli Arbarei and Villanovaforru lie only few kilometers of each other. In the nearer vicinity are interesting Nuraghe complexes, but also the Giara, a high plateau under environmental protection with rare animals, beautiful footpaths and herbs paths.

| Villanovaforru |
Archaeologic museum and Nuraghe Genna Mari. Few kilometers away you can visit the Museum " Museo territoriale di Sa Corona Arrubia " Sardinian diorama and its temporary exhibitions.

Outside Lunamatrona there is the grave of the giants "Su Quaddu de Nixias", that was appointed to the Monte Clara culture (2500 b. C.).

Small town with a lot of sculptures and Wall Paintings (Murales). In the church of San Giovanni Battista you can admire an Altar Screen of Pietro Cavaro from the year 1518.

In Sardara you can admire the small church of Sant'Anastasia. Close-by was found a Nuragic fountain sanctuary from the 10th century b.C. . This picturesque small place is also known for its Thermal Springs and Spa approximately 2 kms to the west.

| Sanluri |
Small place in the Campidano plain. In 1409 scene of the battle where the Arborea Giudicato was defeated by the Aragonese. The castle (Castello di Eleonora d'Arborea) from the 14th century and still in good condition is really worth seeing. Around the rooms you'll also find the museum "Museo Risorgimentale Duca d'Aosta" with a private collection and wax figures. Opposite the castle is a Capuchin's convent with a collection of documents about the 400 years history of the Capuchin Order in Sardinia.

Between Las Plassas and Tuili is where the exhibition Sardinia in miniature was built, with on-scale duplicates of important buildings and attractions around Sardinia. Good fun day out for the all family.

| Barumini |
You can admire the Nuraghe Complex "Su Nuraxi" (fortress complex). A UNESCO-world cultural heritage site, which was built around 1500 b.C. and then further developed. Around the bulwark there are the base walls of a Nuragic village with approx. 200 round huts.

| High Plateau Giara di Gesturi |
Cork oak forests and marshes (Paolo Maiori) gives an appearance almost as savanna to this flat high plateau. It lies 576 ms above sea level and starts in the small village of Tuili. This about 45 square kilometers big protected area is the only place on which still live the small, half-wild horses threatened for extinction (the so-called Giara horses).

On this high plateau, with wonderful panoramic views of the Marmilla, there is an impressive grave of the giants "Sa Domu e'S'Orku". It belongs with its huge stone block to the biggest in Sardinia. In summer you are able to reach this plateau also with a chair lift.

| Nuraghe Arrubiu |
The Nuraghe to the south of Orroli belongs to one of the biggest Nuraghe Complex in Sardinia. The excavations took place only in the 80s. The enclosure was used in Roman times also as a winery.

| Sacred Well Santa Vittoria |
Temple sanctuary in an amazing panoramic landscape. It lies on a basalt plateau to the west of the small village of Serri. The enclosure was used in nuragic times as a place of pilgrimage and consists of the remainders of different buildings. Among them a meeting hall, a sacred well, as well as a small church that was built in later times.

This big megalithic necropolis consists of several burial chambers, circle graves and approximately 60 menhirs, distributed on a cork oak grove.

| Cagliari |
Castello quarter: fortress built by the Pisans and later developed by the Aragoneses. It's worth visiting the city walls that used to protect this quarter, its watch-towers, the palace of the archbishop, as well as the cathedral, the modern museum complex, a lot of narrow streets and the wide panoramic terraces. Via Roma: A beautiful harbour promenade with long arcades and buildings from the 19th century. Here you can also see the elegant town hall in neo-Gothic style.
Cittadella dei Musei: The former weapons warehouse of the Savoia Family, it's today the site of the archaeologic museum, the ethnology museum, the picture gallery and the national museum. Roman amphitheater: Amphitheater from the 2nd century directly built on a cliff. The arena used to be flooded by means of an irrigation system for rehearsing naval battles . Recognizable are to this day the tunnels in which the wild animals were held. As well as spectators' ranks and passages.
Bastione San Remy: ideal panoramic view point of the city, the beach, the harbour and the surrounding area. In the evening flamingos and enormous birds flock frequently across the bastion.
Elephant tower: this tower mantained its perfect fortress architecture. The gate opening mechanism as well as the elephant's statue in the facade can still be seen to this day.
San Pancrazio tower: these towers built in 1307 represents the highest point (137 ms above sea level) of the city and was sketched like its twin brother (elephant tower) at the beginning of the 14th century by the Sardinian architect Giovanni Capula.
Basilica and pilgrimage church " Nostra Signora di Bonaria ": the most important sanctuary of Sardinia consists of two churches built close to each other, a cloister, a vestry with a lot of votive gifts and a monumental churchyard.
Botanic garden: approx. 5 hectares of garden with plants from the Mediterranean area, Africa, America, Asia and the Pacific islands. This is the third-biggest botanic garden in Italy. San Benedetto Market: characteristic weekly market (biggest in Italy) with fresh Sardinian goods like vegetable, fruit, fish and meat, between via Cocco Ortu and via Tiziano (Monday to Saturday from 7am to 2pm)

| Oristano |
This city was created in the year 1070 west of Sardinia, a rich fishing area. In the historical old part of town you can visit the Marian Cathedral (1128) and its vault, as well as the tower of Mariano II Torre di Mariano II (1291) and the gothical church of Santa Chiara from the 14th century. In the Palazzo Parpaglia are kept the archaeological pieces of finds from Tharros and from medieval Oristano.

The so-called Stagno di Cabras is the largest lagoon of the peninsula. With its waters rich of fish is also one of the largest wetland areas of the island.

On the coast of the " Golfo di Oristano ", approximately 4 kms away from Cabras, lies this small bathing resort with a yacht harbour. In the entrance of the village rises one of the many Saracen Towers distributed on the island coastline. It has also gave the name to this resort. (Torre Grande-the big tower).

| Phoenician Roman city of Tharros |
Antique harbour, built in 730 b.C. as a stop for merchant ships from the Mediterranean area. From 238 b.C. Tharros became a rich Roman city. Baths, houses and cult places are found in the south side, while in the north part you can find a Tophet (sacrifice place) and the Nuraghe village of Murru Mannu.

To reach Cape San Marco take a beautiful walk from Tharros up to the top of the Sinis peninsula.

Once the small mining industry place of "Montevecchio" was the biggest mine of lead and zinc of Europe. Today after previous arrangement you can have a guided tour of the mineral museum and part of the mine.

Sandy dunes in approx. 20 kms of distance from Montevecchio. Today instead of the old mine building there's a beatiful hotel on the beach.

| Sacred Well of Santa Cristina |
Antique Nuraghe Complex and sacred well from the 9th Century b.C, close to Paulilatino. You can reach this highly visited site easily from a posted exit on the Carlo Felice motorway SS131.

Sartiglia (Horse riding tournament) in Oristano |
the Sartiglia takes place on the Sunday of Carnival and Tuesday after. It's a spectacular rider tournament, that goes back to the 16th Century. The different guilds represents the groups of riders and must spear a silver star hanging over the distance while gallopping. The number of these stars is classified as sign of coming harvests. After the tournament, riding acrobats show their amazing skills with horses. This event is particularly important and very much appreciated by the local population and it's becoming well-known to the tourist that come numerously every year.

| Horse race S'Ardia in Sedilo |
On the 6th and 7th July the perhaps most famous rural celebration of Sardinia takes place in Sedilo. And it culminates in the so-called S'Ardia, a bareback horse-race which symbolizes the victory of Constantine over Maxentius.
