Place and Surroundings
The university town of Sassari is the second largest and second most important city in respect of economics, politics and culture. It's worth to be mentioned the oldest part of town with buildings from the most different epochs, the archaeologic museum Sanna, the cathedral San Nicola (15th century Aragonian-Catalan Gotic style), the monastic church of Santa Maria di Betlemme, as well as the centre of town around Piazza Italia. And the Romanique church of San Pietro in Silki in the outskirts of Sassari.

The two Presidents of Italy, Antonio Segni and Francesco Cossiga, were born in Sassari.
San Nicola Dome
It was built at the end of the 14th Century in a Catalan-Gothic style, still visible inside today. The facade was redesigned in the 17th Century in baroque style and covered with excessive ornamental figures, mythical animals and numerous saints.
National Archaeologic Museum Sanna
The museum main outline is the Nuragic and Pre-Nuragic culture. With a collection of Nuragic bronze figurines and tools of the everyday life. But also a Roman and punic section.
Alghero
Sardinian-Catalan coastal town in North-West Sardinia. Not to miss during a visit to the city are the “Torre dell´Esperò material” (tower of the royal spur), the cathedral “Santa Maria” as well as “via Principe Umberto” with the historical “Casa Doria” from the 16th Century.
Neptune Caves
Impressive limestone caves, that can be reached by boat or also on foot via numerous steps.
Capo Caccia
168 m high limestone rocks to the north of Alghero.
Necropolis Anghelu Ruju
Between Sassari and Alghero, approximately 9 kms from Alghero. The remote necropolis from the prehistoric time of the Ozieri culture, has 36 graves with stylized glass horns above each entrance
Trenino Verde
Excursions with the historic steam engine " Trenino Verde "(green little train): Alghero -> Sassari -> Nulvi -> Tempio Pausania -> Palau.
Stintino
Small fishing village at the top northwest of Sardinia. Famous for the antique traditions of catching tuna, and ideal for aquatic sports of all kinds. From here a road leads to the cape "Capo Falcone" with its two Spanish fortresses.
Asinara Island
The island Asinara belonged to the Gennargentu National Park and offers safety to rare birds of prey, sea birds, Mufflons, wild boars, as well as the unique, white donkeys (asini bianchi).
Also due to the rare plant types and holm oaks is an interesting place of research for Botanists.
Nuraghe Santu Antine and Valle dei Nuraghi
Exceptionally big and well mantained Nuraghe (approx. 40 kms to the south of Sassari), in a long valley with meadows. It's not to be missed the impressive Nuraghe Santu Antine consisting of a main tower surrounded by a three sided wall with three pilings.
Castelsardo
Just as Alghero, Castelsardo was built at the beginning of the 12th century by the aristocrat family Doria and it stands on an old volcanic land. It's worth visiting the castle with its entangled alleys, beautiful panoramic points and artisan basket museum.
Santissima Trinità di Saccargia
Impressive church close to Sassari in Pisan Romanesque style (alternate stripes of black basalt with white limestone), started in 1116 and finished in 1200. Restored at last at the beginning of the 20th century. The big Fresco from the 12th century is one of the few examples of the Romanesque fresco painting in Italy.
San Pietro di Sorres
One of the most beautiful Pisan Churches on a mountain peak approximately 40 kms to the south of Sassari.
Nekropole Sant'Andrea Priu
Very impressive necropolis on a cliff (Domus de Janas) from the prehistoric time of the Ozieri culture (3rd 2nd Century b.C.) consisting of several caves used as graves. The biggest one is the so-called Tomba del Capo (chief grave).
Position: approximately 6 kms away from Bonorva, in direction of Bono.
Bonorva
Beautiful small town with beautiful granite houses on the plateau of Campeda. The Museo Archeologico with findings from the necropolis Sant'Andrea Priu is worth visiting.
Monte d'Accodi
Singular terraced altar mountain around the Mediterranean and Europe. It resembles in its form a Mesopotamian Ziqqurat (temple of the sun). The birth of this enclosure can be dated back to 4200 years b.C.. It lies between Sassari and Porto Torres.

Cavalcata Sarda is held in May the Sunday before the last:
One of the largest folk procession, with traditional costumes, decorated carriages and horses, as well as rider competitions.

I Candelieri - 14th of August:
This celebration goes back to the 16th century and represents the most important traditional meeting in Sassari. The traditionally dressed members of the craftsman and worker guilds carry on their shoulders nine decorated candles (weighting about 400 kg each). And they transport them from the “Palazzo della città” to the church Santa Maria di Betlemme.
Easter Procession Lunissanti in Castelsardo
The Procession of “Lunissanti” with Gregorian singings is very worth seeing.
It's held on Easter Monday in Castelsardo, and begins in the medieval church of Santa Maria. The ceremony originates from the 14th Century and today is celebrated exactly the same way.
