To facilitate your reservation process here are some useful piece of advice and tips:
Which harbor should I depart from? From North Europe the best harbour to depart from are Marseille and Toulon. Nonetheless Genoa in Northern Italy is an interesting alternative where crossing are more frequent and less expensive. In regards to the harbour of Livorno or Civitavecchia a bit more south are very handy if you are already in Italy, in a region close to one or the other port, or if you'd like to arrive directly to Arbatax or Cagliari.
Which Ferry Company should I choose? The ferries of 'Grimaldi' are a bit more comfortable than the others and therefore can be on average more expensive than the ferries of 'Corsica-Sardinia Ferries' and 'Mobylines'.
What are the onboard services offered by the Ferry Companies? All ferries dispose of a bar with television areas, a self-service restaurant, as well as table service restaurant. Passengers can also do some shopping in a small souvenir, newsagent or a perfumery. However, international newspapers and magazines are not always on sale. On some ferries there is even a playroom for small kids to keep them entertained during long crossings. A naval doctor guarantees the medical care and safety. All ferries are fitted with air conditioning in the cabins, as well as in the common rooms and in the outside area there are benches to enjoy the sun.
Where do I stay during the crossing? All ferries offer the choice between deck, reclining seat or a cabin. The deck is recommended on day ferries, however, on a night ferry you should book a reclining seat or a cabin. The reclining seats are on the deck in air-conditioned common rooms and offer a storage area for the luggage. Finally the cabins are distributed on different deck floors.
Which cabin should I book? The cabins offer two to four sleeping places. Additionally, every cabin has its own bathroom. The majority of the cabins are on the higher decks therefore not near the garages or the engine room.
Am I allowed to go with my dog in the cabin? With Corsica & Sardinia Ferries dogs are allowed to go inside the cabin and can spend the whole crossing together with their owners. However, on the ferries Grimaldi and Mobylines dogs are not admitted in cabins and they must sleep overnight in a locked and special designed dog's cage.
When do I need to be at the Ferry harbor? When planning the journey to the harbor always add possible traffic on the highway and plan to arrive at least one and a half hour before departure. Note that in Genoa you can easily get lost on the way to the harbor.
How do I embark the vessel? At the harbor you follow first the signs to your Ferry Company and then the signs of your ferry. Every ferry has its own name that is also written on your ferry documents. The harbor staff will direct you to a car queue where you wait for the signal to get on the vessel.
When should I leave the vehicle? After you have parked in the garage of the vessel, remember to take all that you need during the crossing from the vehicle. During the crossing the access to the garage is not permitted.
How long does the crossing last? With fast ferries the crossing is approximately six hours, with a night or a day ferry can be, depending on the distance, between ten to twelve hours.
What should I pay attention to when leaving the car? Write down on the envelope of your ticket the number or the letter of the parking level. Put the hand brake on, close the vehicle, lock it with the key and leave the alarm off. Otherwise, with rough sea the alarm can turn on by itself.
How do I find my cabin? Go up the stairs or the lift and you reach the reception where the friendly staff will guide you.
When should I leave the cabin? A loudspeaker informs the passengers about the arrival approx. 30 minutes before. Remember before you leave the cabin to see if you have forgotten anything.
When do I go back to my vehicle? You can access the garages only after the ferry has arrived at the harbor and it's in a still position. Please wait to switch on the engine when your line starts to move.
After you have made your decision, have your credit card ready for the online booking, as well as all information about the vehicle (length, height and number plate) if you plan the crossing by car.
Remember to book the trip with a night ferry one day before the booked holiday begins.
